Sugar has several properties that make it considered a tamasic product:
Lack of Pranic Energy: In Ayurvedic medicine, it is believed that foods can be either “pranic” (having life energy) or “apranny” (depriving life energy). Sugar is classified as an “apranic” product, which means it does not provide the body with positive energy.
Impact on Emotions: Sugar can lead to emotional instability and spikes in energy levels. After consuming large amounts of sugar, there is a sudden increase in energy, but it is short-lived and may be followed by feelings of fatigue and low mood.
Creation of Toxins: Excess sugar in the diet can lead to the formation of toxins in the body, which is against the basic principles of Ayurvedic hygiene of life.
Instead of sugar, Ayurvedic medicine promotes the use of natural sweeteners such as honey, maple syrup or dates, which are considered more sattvic (with the energy of balance and purity).
Ayurvedic Medicine emphasizes that a healthy diet should be balanced and adapted to individual needs and constitution. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the type of food we eat to achieve harmony between body, mind and soul. Sugar, as a tamasic product, has a negative impact on our well-being and health.
